OBJECT: To make quality recordings in a non-sterile environment, capture the essence of a performance and to encourage experimentation and creativity. This was originally my self-indulgent home studio. However, over the last few years I have done several commercial recordings here and had a lot of fun doing it. So now I have decided to open my doors to do some select projects. WOW a "REAL" studio! Yeah, not really... I don't have isolated rooms, vocal & drum booths and $10,000 mics and preamps. I do have a living room, kitchen and dining room though - and some dividers and baffles to help control bleed. I also have a bunch of recording equipment, signal processors, instruments and synthesizers - some good, some mediocre. |
Is it possible to create a good quality recording
Rudy Van Gelder would say so. He was responsible for just about every session on the Blue Note label from 1953 to 1967, along with thousands of others. From 1953 to 1959, the recordings were made in his parents' living room in Hackensack, NJ! The key is understanding the "sound" of band that you are recording and capturing the right "vibe" in terms of performance. Understanding your gear, and knowing how to get the best out of what you've got - whether it's top shelf stuff found in only the most elite studios or stuff from your local music store. It's also important to create a mix using textures that are appropos to the style of music be it Jazz, Rock or Techno. I believe that by combining these elements it is possible to create a quality recording on a non-studio environment. |
What I can offer |
I would like to work as engineer and/or producer with original artists who what to record a few songs or even a full length release and are looking to do so in a laid back, creative environment. The style of music is unimportant, however if I don't "get" where you are coming from musically I'll probably do more harm than good. So if I'm not "feeling" your vibe, I'll most likely refer you to another studio. We've all heard recordings done by studios that don't understand the music that they were recording - a folk song is not supposed to sound like Metallica. I have a bunch of instruments available and encourage experimentation and creative recording techniques. And though I have no fixed rates and will quote based on each individual project, I never charge more than $20.00 per hour. |
What I am not! |
I am not a full-time recording studio cranking out demos or "whatever", nor do I want to be. If you are in Northwestern Vermont and are looking for a quality recording studio check out the links below.
